BACKGROUND
Julie holds a Masters Degree in Piano Performance from Combs College of Music, where she also minored in Voice. She has taught Piano, Guitar and Voice at the College level, as well as classes in Music Appreciation, Music Theory, and the History of Rock. For over thirty years she has performed classical, rock, folk, theater music and background piano in a variety of venues. She has also taught workshops and seminars in lyric writng and song writing. Julie continues to increase her understanding of piano technique though her own study with Master teacher Julia Benfer.
TEACHING APPROACH
Julie believes in teaching a strong grounding in technique: reading, rhythm, notational skills, interpretation and historical context. With this foundation, the student is well-equiped to work in a variety of genres. Lessons focus on fundamentals, accuracy, and musicality. Julie also believes that each student has his or her own special relationship to music, and that lessons should be geared toward drawing out the musical ability unique to each student.
